WELTON T. ASHBY, SR.

WELTON T. ASHBY, SR., affectionately know as "Tambow", was born Friday, January 9, 1920 to the late Sallie Ashby Smokes and Jacob Ashby in Pungoteague, VA. God called him home from labor to rest on Wednesday, October, 2013.

"Tambow" was reared in a loving Christian home and community; he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, was baptized at the age of 12 in September of 1932 and joined Shiloh. His love and devotion to God and the church gave him the opportunity to serve with the Senior Choir and Male Chorus. He was a Sunday School teacher and the Superintendent. He was also ordained as a Deacon. In the 4th District Sunday School Union, he also served as the Superintendent. For many years, he supported the Eastern Shore VA-MD Baptist Association and was the assistant treasurer.

From his first union, Barbara Faye Ashby Garner was born, then August 27, 1955 he married Doretha Elizabeth Ames and, from this union, five children were born.

He traveled along this road of life for 93 years touching many lives. He was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. August 12, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army serving in World War II. During his tour of duty, his Military Occupational Specialty was a driver of the Red Ball Express in the Transportation Division. After his discharge on December 9, 1945, he became an entrepreneur of W.T. Ashby Trucking that lasted for 40 years. He was raised in the Accomack County Masonic Lodge #62 in the year of 1953 and the American Legion serving for more than 40 years.

He leaves to cherish the fondest memories: his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Doretha, 4 daughters; Barbara Garner, Janet Northam, Marcella Bull (Joseph), & Lisa Ashby; 2 sons, Raymond Ames (Laverne) & Welton Ashby, Jr.; 8 grandchildren; Erika, Rodney, Donae', Jalon, Renata', Taylor, Michael & Raymond, Jr; 3 great-grandchildren; Isis, Tevin, & Kadaisia, 1 great great-grandchild; Makiaya; 3 sisters-in-law; Frances Washington, Sarah Ames & Gladys Ames, 2 special nieces; Ernestine Ashby & IraVon Hope, 5 godchildren; LaCourtney, Connie, Bobbie, Palmer and Tyrone aka "Bill"; his adopted family (the family of the late Charlie and Marie Parker); several nieces, nephew; cousins; a special neighbor, Preston Kellam; the Shiloh Church family; and the Boston Community.
