RUFUS CUSTIS

RUFUS CUSTIS, beloved son of the late Viola Custis, was born on May 11, 1940 in Modest Town, Virginia. God, in His infinite wisdom, quietly called him home on Friday February 22, 2013 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawaddox, Virginia.

Rufus was educated in the public schools of Accomack County, Virginia. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and attended regularly until his health prevented him from doing so.

“Pa”, as he was affectionately called, was united in Holy Matrimony to Nancy Hickman, who preceded him in death. He loved driving trucks and was employed by several local trucking companies throughout his career.

Pa enjoyed watching westerns and wrestling, but most of all, he thoroughly enjoyed shooting the breeze with family and friends. He could spin a tale so convincingly that you wouldn’t realize you were had until he would burst into laughter. That laughter and joking spirit will be missed by all of us whose lives he has touched.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: three sons, Calvin Custis, Richard Custis, and Norman Handy; six grandchildren, Keyon Bibbins, Richard Custis, Jr., Da’rion Anderson, Norasia Handy, Rykia Godwin, and Chevonte Godwin; four great-grandchildren, Ke’mya Bibbins, Keyon Bibbins, Jr., Azayla Godwin, and Zyionna Godwin; one daughter-in-law, Loretta Handy; three sisters-in-law, Catherine, Brenda, and Cleopatra Hickman; one brother-in-law, James Hickman; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
