MICHAEL JOHNSON FLETCHER

MICHAEL JOHNSON FLETCHER, the youngest son of the late Albert and Roxie Smith-Fletcher was born October 18, 1951 in Nassawadox, VA and he departed this life on June 15, 2012 in Parksley, VA. Mike was educated in the Public Schools of Accomack County and left to go into the U. S. Army on the buddy system with Rhonda Bailey, his friend since first grade. He grew up in Onancock and with the exception of a 3-year tour of duty in the Army and an even shorter stay in Paterson, NJ, he resided next door to where he was raised from a baby. Mike was known far and wide as the “Godfather” and adults and children alike called him that. He enjoyed the notoriety of his nickname, but when he didn’t want to be bothered he would say “Put two eggs in your shoes and beat it.” Mike could do almost anything in the carpentry business and worked for many years in that trade. He was also employed for a few years by the Town of Onancock as a general laborer and a carpenter’s helper for ESAAAC for a short time before his health began to fail. Although he could still get around and do some things, when anyone asked him, he stated that he didn’t do that kind of work anymore. On May 18, 2012, Michael gave his life to Christ and held on to the end. He was predeceased by his brothers: Theodore Albert, Warren Edward, and Randolph Thomas Fletcher and his sister: Mary Davis-Collins. Michael leaves to mourn his passing: his son, Michael Yerby of Baltimore, MD; his daughter, Keisha Kelson of Paterson, NJ, eight grandchildren: two brothers, Richard Dallas (Arlene) Fletcher of Paterson, NJ; and Alfred Jerome Fletcher of Louisburg, NC; his sister, Thelma Fletcher-Gillespie of Onancock, VA; his foster brother Dwayne (Rona) Bundick, his spiritual mother, Sallie Anderson-Young, a god-sister, Penny Chandler, his uncle, Robert Tony Fletcher, his aunt Natalie Overton, his sister-in-law, Gloria Fletcher, a special nephew, Randolph Davis who loved him like a father; his special friends from childhood to present, Letha “Doll Baby” Miles; Michael Parker; Warren Rahine Satchell, and Michael Matthews; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
