MERCIER V. HARRIS

Mercier Virginia Pettit Harris, daughter of the late James and Estella Snead Pettit was born Wednesday, July 17, 1929 in Accomack County, VA. She died peacefully on November 12, 2019 at Riverside Hospital, in Onley, VA.

Mercier was the 8th child of 9 children, Annie, Ida, Eula, James, Marcelline, Herman, Janet, and Theresa and all preceded her in death except the eldest, Ida.

Mercier was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools and was a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School. She was employed as a medical assistant with training under Dr. Shelly in Chincoteague, VA. After her marriage to the late William Northan in Virginia, she relocated to New York and continued her medical training.

Her second marriage to Rick Ricardo of Brooklyn, NY was brief and led her to Philadelphia, PA where she worked for Dr. Ellis for many years.

While employed for Dr. Ellis, she met and married John Harris and they lived in Glassboro, NJ for 44 years. She had no children of her own but mothered many, always taking care of family and friends. She was lovingly referred to as “Sis”, “Aunt Merci” or “Miss Merci”. She loved music and entertaining family and friends. Her meals were worthy of top chef ratings. We were known to fight over her yeast rolls. Mercier was the life of the party and could out dance most. For many years she was champion of her bowling league. She enrolled in a French class at the nearby college and even purchased an organ for her music lessons.

Mercier’s husband John passed away a few months ago, so she returned to Virginia once again to be near her family. She leaves to mourn her loss: sister, Ida Hatton of Parksley, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
