RUTH EVELYN BECKETT

RUTH EVELYN REYNOLDS DENNIS BECKETT was born on December 15, 1919 in Pocomoke City, MD. Ruth departed this life on Friday, April 6, 2012 surrounded by family and friends at Coastal Hospice in Salisbury, MD after a long illness. Ruth was born to the late Sallie Sarah and Albert James Reynolds. She was the 4th of 10 children. She was educated in the Worcester County Public Schools at the local school on St. James Church grounds in the building next to the church. Ruth was employed by local poultry processing plants in the area before passing the Poultry Inspector’s exam by the US Department of Agriculture. She became a poultry inspector and was gainfully employed for many years and enjoyed her work and made many friends. Ruth was an active member of St. James United Methodist church and was a member of the United Methodist Women, building fund, and the choir for a short time. Ruth would always lend her culinary talents during church functions. Ruth loved to cook for everyone. She would always cook too much food hoping that others would stop by. She was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables. Ruth at one point had 150 potted plants and a garden with many vegetables, many of which she gave away. Crabbing and shopping were also some of her other favorite pastimes. Ruth was a very independent woman even after retirement. She raised her granddaughter, Valerie to adulthood. She supported her granddaughter throughout secondary school and college. Ruth is preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence Dennis and John Handy Dennis, Jr., one sister, Rebecca Gibbs and 4 brothers, Albert Reynolds, William “Bill” Reynolds, Richard Reynolds and Wardell Reynolds. She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline (William) Johnson of Salisbury, MD and Constance “Lavern” Wright of Baltimore, MD, one son, Gary M. (Jackie) Burton of Martinsville, VA, special adopted grandchild Valerie Ballard of Capitol Heights, MD, 4 sisters, Agnes Waters of Philadelphia, PA, Naomi James of Pocomoke, MD, Lauretta Reynolds of Philadelphia, PA and Dorothy Eubanks of Philadelphia, PA, one brother-in-law, Alonzo Waters of Philadelphia, PA, 11 grandchildren, Andrea Johnson of Georgetown, DE, William (Hiele) Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, Brian (Laundetta) Jones of Baltimore, MD, Aaron (Tiana) Jones of Los Angeles, CA, Naomi Jones of New York, NY, John “Juney” Dennis, III of Wilmington, DE, Tara “Annie” (Luke) Brown of Wilmington, DE, Fred Dennis of Philadelphia, Pa, Corey (Marquetta) Ballard of Philadelphia, PA, Gary Burton, II of Richmond, VA and Ebony Winston of Richmond, VA and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
