CHARLIE BAILEY

Charlie “Doodie” Bailey, son of the late Orris & Maggie Bailey, was born on December 14, 1918 in Onley, VA. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Riverside Shore Nursing Home in Parksley, VA. He was 98 years old. Although our hearts are burdened with sorrow, we find joy and strength in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He accepted the Lord as his personal Savior many years ago and served at St. John’s Baptist Church as a Deacon, Trustee, member of the Choir and served in various other positions through the church. One of his favorite songs was “Jesus will work it out”.

Uncle Doodie or Deacon Bailey as he was called, was educated in the Accomack County Public School system. His employment includes many, but to name a few, he worked at Tammy and Johnny’s, Carlton Fisher’s clothing store, and did landscaping at various businesses and residences around Onley, VA. He was a kind and loving man who was humble and loved his family very much. He loved watching baseball, car racing and making delicious sweet potato pies. But, mostly he found enjoyment as a taxi cab driver, driving people up and down the shore. He loved interacting with people and seldom complained. One would never find him mistreating or have a disparaging word about anyone. His family and friends will truly miss him.

Uncle Doodie knew all of the family history and often family members would turn to him for information on ancestry. He had stories for every occasion which provided humor and wisdom and was a hallmark for anyone who interacted with him. Although he did not have any children of his own, Uncle Doodie shared responsibility in raising various family members, especially his nieces and nephews who looked upon him as a father figure and role model. He was preceded in death by his siblings, George Bailey, Harrison “Buck” Bailey, Will Bailey, Brantley Bailey, Myrtle “Boot” Bailey-Hope, Bessie Bailey-Bloxom, and Annie Bailey.

Left to cherish his precious memories are a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and great-great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives and fond friends.
