OLIVER KELLAM

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us all in our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” II Corinthians 1:3-4 OLIVER KELLAM, beloved son of the late Joseph Kellam Sr. and Lucretia Sturgis Kellam, was born May 22, 1922 in Accomac, VA. He departed this life on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Shore Life Care in Parksley, Virginia. Oliver attended Accomack County Schools for a short time. At a young age, Oliver helped his family with many jobs at home and on the local farms. He found work very rewarding and his mother taught him many skills at home, such as cooking and enjoying family life. Oliver was given the name “Sweet Milk” by his family and friends. He loved gardening and shared the fruit of his labor with his neighbors and friends. Some of the jobs he held were sanitation worker for the town of Onancock, helper for Edgar Wharton and Joe Kamps. He was not a lazy man. Oliver joined St. Luke AME at an early age and enjoyed serving the Lord and being with God’s people. In 1938, he met Agnes Finney. They were married for 49 years. Although they did not have children, he and Agnes nurtured several foster children and he also was a father figure to Odelsie Wessels, Barbara Kellam, Rev. Lewis Brim, and his sister, Brenda. Ollie will be remembered as a friendly, hardworking neighbor and friend. As his health failed, he relinquished his care to caretaker, Martha White and entered Shore Life Care on June 19, 2010. He leaves to cherish his memory: a daughter, Minister Veronica Drummond (Vernie) Washington of Mt. Vernon, NY, a son, Oliver (Shantel) Drummond, Fayetteville, NC, 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Surjah and Richard (Lorraine) Kellam, a brother-in-law, Robert Lewis, a sister-in-law, Rose Lewis, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
